7-day Low-VAT meal plan
Avoid the pinch of rising food prices by making vat-free meals for the whole family.
With the increase of value added tax to 15% on 19 April 2018, Finance Minister, Malusi Gigaba announced that while VAT will increase, more foods will be available to buy at zero-VAT.
These foods are considered basic household goodies and will not be taxed to make sure that basic ingredients are more accessible to all.

Knowing which foods are VAT-free will help you save money but not knowing what to prepare with the foods on the list can be frustrating. Here’s a 7-day meal plan that’s not only packed with nutrients but budget-friendly. It’ll also help save you time – make the creamy rice porridge for breakfast in advance and mix things up with different toppings – just click on each of the dish names for the recipe.
Note: Zero rates don’t apply when you’re buying a ready-to-eat meal. You’ll need to buy products individually and fresh or frozen in their original form. For example, frozen potato chips can be supplied at zero rate but not if it contains additives that make it darker.
